Since graduating from our school in northern Uganda, Obomo applied to law school three times and was denied each time. He was at the top of the class at our school, but still, there are only a couple of law schools in Uganda, and competition for the few available spots is fierce. The first time he told me he wanted to be a lawyer was when he’d arrived at our school more than a decade earlier. He had seen firsthand what injustice looked like and wanted to be part of the solution for his country. This passion to be a lawyer never left him, and we talked about it often throughout his years of primary and high school. We joked about opening up a law firm together called “Obomo & Bob.” Kind of a catchy name, I thought.

After graduation, his dream of being a lawyer seemed both near and far away. He called me shortly after the first time he had been turned down for law school. I told him to go sit on the dean’s bench until they let him in. He thought I was kidding, but this was a tactic I employed in my own life, so I was certain it would improve his chances. (If you’ve read Love Does, you know what I’m talking about.)

Obomo called me the second time he was turned down, and I told him to go back and sit on the dean’s bench again. “This time,” I told him, “don’t leave until they let you in.” I bet he thought I was still kidding, but instead of thinking about the unfairness of his rejection and the steep nature of the mountain he was climbing, he got tenacious. He went again, met with the dean, and told him again why he wanted to get in. He spoke about losing his parents and finding the school. He spoke about his dedication and commitment to his classes. He told him about his dream to bring more justice to Uganda.

Then he asked the dean if he had ever launched anything into space. When the dean said no, Obomo told him that if he helped him become a lawyer, it would be considered an even bigger launch than the one he and his classmates had completed. The dean gave a long pause, shuffled some papers around on his desk, looked up, and said to Obomo: “You’re in.” It wasn’t the first time Obomo had heard these words.

What has got you distracted? What is the big ambition you’ve been trying to launch that seems to be stuck on the tarmac? I know it’s hard; much of life is hard. Get back at it. Keep showing up for yourself and the people who will benefit if you don’t quit. You are probably just a few sentences away from the next grand adventure. Find a couple of people who will make themselves available to you. Be the kind of person who will be available to others, and start pointing toward the stars once again with awe and wonder and undistracted and relentless determination.
